Lenin's Mausoleum
Even visitors who oppose Lenin's views or indifferent to him will find it worth
while, for the sake of the experience, to join the queue - sometimes apparently
endless, particularly in summer - and go down into the air conditioned
vault in which the embalmed body of the founder of the Soviet State lies
in a glass coffin. The Lenin Mausoleum, designed by the outstanding Soviet
architect Alexei Shchusev, was
erected in Red Square in 1930, replacing
a wooden mausoleum built there immediately after Lenin's death.
